Design studio GACHOT has completed the Keebler J. Straz Lounge at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
The renovation project was underwritten by Met managing director Keebler J. Straz in partnership with Elle Decor, which helped source renovation materials, furniture, and other fixtures.
The 1,500-square-foot space—formerly known as the Eleanor Belmont Room and originally designed by late New York interior decorator Billy Baldwin—boasts dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows, ultra-high ceilings, and a centrally located bar.
Inspired by Baldwin’s original layout, GACHOT arranged the VIP lounge into four seating groups that offer flexibility for Met Patrons during performances and for private events.
Custom screens guide circulation and conceal the back-of-house door, while a vintage Rolex clock remains a focal point behind the custom brass bar.
Textured wallpaper wraps the room with a light shimmer, and minimal lighting brings out the gold in the ceiling. This sets the backdrop for plush seating, stone coffee tables, and black and white photography from the Met Archives that adorns the walls.
“The GACHOT team was enthused about the opportunity to work together with Elle Decor and the Met to redesign the lounge with the intention of evoking interest in the opera from all generations,” says John Gachot, cofounder of the locally based firm.
“In a building as ornate as the Metropolitan Opera, it was important for the design of the new Keebler J. Straz Lounge to align with its surroundings,” Gachot adds. “The palette reflects that of the lobby and auditorium with rich tones of red, gold, and warm white. It feels sophisticated and refined.”
