Los Angeles-based Palisociety has announced the opening of its newest property in Portland, Oregon, Hotel Grand Stark. Palisociety partnered with Portland-based North 45 Projects on the design of the hotel’s common areas and with Submarine Hospitality for the food and beverage program and two on-property culinary concepts.
Hotel Grand Stark is a 57-room historic property that has been designed and reimagined back to its hospitality roots. The 1908 building is a four-story structure that was originally built as a hotel (née Hotel Chamberlain in 1924) and housed a legendary local furniture manufacturer for the past 80 years. Today, its classic façade features signage that takes inspiration from the furniture store’s original sign.
Hotel Grand Stark is envisioned as a communal, inclusive public space featuring a gallery-inspired central lobby that connects the public spaces upon entry with a neutral backdrop punctuated by a carefully collected art installation featuring local artists and makers, custom furnishings, and vintage pieces. Guests are welcomed into the spacious lobby where original hardwood floors, white-washed and art-adorned walls, and an abundance of natural light flood the space. Modernist archways line both sides of the primary lobby space, and tall ceilings are highlighted with a mixed assortment of vintage and industrial-style lighting.
To the right from the entry, a front desk area awaits with a dark green centerpiece desk that sits before a wall of Breccia Pernice marble in a terracotta tone. Behind the front desk, guests will find the Study Hall, a bright, separate space designed to be a community work and meeting space that can also be used as a private dining room for special events.
