Opening this month, Dun Aluinn will unveil its transformation into a fully staffed luxury hotel, welcoming individual room bookings for the first time.
The nine-bedroom Scottish Highland property, overlooking Aberfeldy and the Tay Valley, is evolving to meet the growing demand for intimate stays. Designed by owner, interior designer, and architect Susie Whyte, the estate balances grandeur and warmth, delivering luxury hotel service within the inviting atmosphere of a country home.
Preserving Highland heritage
Originally constructed as a family residence in 1909, the property has undergone several incarnations, including a period as a boys’ boarding house for the local Breadalbane Academy.
Upon acquiring the estate, Susie and John Whyte opted for a considered restoration over a complete overhaul, with local artisans like Strathearn Joiners tapped to preserve the building’s historic details.
Layers of paint were painstakingly removed to celebrate the original features, while ceiling cornicing in the main reception rooms and wooden flooring throughout the house were fully restored. Notably, a damaged handrail was repaired using wood sourced from an antique church pew of the same era.
Throughout the converted estate, expansive living areas and sweeping terraces are appointed with natural materials, bespoke furnishings, and modern art. The entryway sets an immediate atmospheric tone with its original tiling, preserved front door, and a striking crochet Glück pendant light by Naomi Paul.

Spaces at Dun Aluinn
The nine bedrooms serve as restorative retreats, complete with soft, organic palettes inspired by the surrounding Perthshire hills. Maintaining a constant connection to nature, the rooms boast expansive valley views, fine linens, fresh flowers, and evening turn-down service.
The spa-like ensuite bathrooms elevate the experience with underfloor heating, while two suites feature freestanding tubs, including a square Japanese-inspired soaking bath, and another boasts a private steam room.
In the main dining area, which seats up to 20 guests, Susie designed a custom 18-foot table fabricated by northern Scotland’s Black Isle Bronze from poured bronze and oak.
Additional gathering spaces include two lounges anchored by fireplaces, a private cinema room, curated play den, and a terrace fire pit equipped with Highland throws.
