Austin-based firm Sanders Architecture has revealed its design of two new Italian restaurants in the Pearl District of San Antonio: Arrosta and Allora. The concepts, both operated by the same owners, stand out in the eclectic culinary corridor, with Arrosta providing a tactile, street smart counterpoint to Allora’s more romantic ambiance.
“Allora’s inspiration was primarily from coastal Italy. Specifically, the architecture of the space, like the menu, is inspired by the bright, vibrant, romantic coastline of the Amalfi Coast,” says Christopher Sanders, principal architect for Sanders Architecture. “Arrosta is inspired by markets on the bustling streets of Rome. An eatery, but also a market, or a place to have a glass of wine, Arrosta is more casual and bohemian than Arrosta.”
Mission-style arches flood Arrosta with natural light, illuminating a tactile palette of terracotta-toned tiles that wrap the open kitchen. Upholstery on the wood chairs and booths complement the hues of the tiles, infusing a warm but sexy sensibility across the airy interior. Meanwhile, at Allora, pops of vibrant color offset a restrained palette. The lofty space is defined by gentle curves that channel the cliffs of the Amalfi coast, while raw concrete finishes contrast rich tiling reminiscent of a glass of Amaro.
