The recently opened Hyatt Centric SouthPark Charlotte has unveiled a new F&B concept, Mizu, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Inspired by Japanese woodfired Robata grills, the restaurant occupies the hotel rooftop, overlooking expansive urban views from the heart of the Queen City. Japanese design sensibilities also informed the aesthetic crafted by Portland, Maine-based studio Mey & Co., which is characterized by color blocking and stylish reinterpretations. “The intent was to draw from traditional Japanese construction methods as well as midcentury design and have those two styles come together seamlessly,” Mey & Co. owner Carrie Dessertine. “We wanted to create an intimate space despite it being large.”
Spread across 4,000 square feet, Mizu comprises a materiality of copper and cherry wood. The natural patina of antimicrobial copper injects a graceful aging into the dialogue of the interior, while cherry millwork staining echoes the Japanese influence. Traditional Shoji screens are reinterpreted with a copper-inlayed glass wraps columns and serves as partitions as well. A custom paint hue known as Portola also adds a custom flair. “We liked the Portola paint as the major wall treatment because it similarly has movement and imperfection that gives a warmth to it,” Dessertine adds.
A 13-seat chef’s counter is oriented around the Robata grill, while an 87-seat terrace is lined with intimate trellises composed of Cumaru wood, a derivative of teak. A private dining room rounds out the lounge-style environment.
