The Hyatt Centric boutique hotel brand has unveiled its first outpost in North Carolina with the opening of Hyatt Centric SouthPark Charlotte. Atlanta-based design firm Rule Joy Trammell + Rubio spearheaded the hotel’s modern design and architecture, which reinterprets the rich history and landscapes of the Southern city.
“Hyatt Centric Charlotte was inspired by the natural beauty and trees of Charlotte,” says Scott Kirk, associate principal for Rule Joy Trammell + Rubio. “Our goal was to bring nature into the hotel.”
An earthy palette characterizes the interior with a materiality of stone, wood, and metal as well as elements inspired by trees. Visitors are greeted in the lobby with elaborate custom artwork and a showstopping staircase designed to recall a twisting tree growing out of the floor. “Visible from outside through soaring two story windows, the grand stair becomes a spectacular sculpture,” Kirk adds.
Lobby restaurant IRO features an intimate, naturally lit culinary experience, while rooftop concept Mizu reinterprets live-fire cooking as it draws inspiration from the wood-fired Robata grills of Japan. An additional rooftop eatery conceived by Charleston, South Carolina-based Indigo Road Hospitality Group is slated to debut in August.
More than 4,000 square feet of meeting and event space is housed onsite, complete with neutral décor, locally inspired artwork, and floor-to-ceiling windows. Enclosed in glass, the hotel’s 10-seat boardroom is a standout space that boasts a mixed media portrait of the city’s namesake—Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz—by local artist Kathleen Dennis.
Home to 175 guestrooms, including 11 suites, each accommodation is crafted to maximize functionality. Abstract depictions of a crown nod to Queen Charlotte in the chambers as well.
