Named for the iconic Indian dark rum, the contemporary Indian soul food concept Old Monk has arrived in New York’s East Village.
Locally based restaurant designer Tarik Currimbhoy oversaw the creation of the 55-seat dining room, which mirrors the vibrant and dynamic spirit of the food. Embracing its gritty bones in Manhattan’s Alphabet City, the restaurant is adorned with vibrant photography depicting monks across the modern world. Traditional colored scarves clad with Sanskrit text hang from the walls, while the bar alcove features saffron hues reminiscent of a monk’s robes.
The polished copper front bar is punctuated with four champagne cork stools. The setting also includes dark walnut liquor barrels, walnut tabletops, antique mirrors, and filament bulbs descending from the stamped copper metal ceilings.
