SENSE Sushi Lab has debuted in Shantou, a city on the eastern coast of Guangdong, China. The new upscale dining destination, designed by JG Phoenix, immerses guests in an abstraction of all four seasons at once. The space was crafted to challenge perceptions of time, while simultaneously enhancing the dining experience with elegant tactility and sense of stillness.
“Instead of excessively narrating the spatial form, we tell the story by reversing the four seasons in the space, where the relationship between all things and nature turns into an energy exchange,” says JG Phoenix founder and design director Ye Hui.
Housed within a high-end office building, SENSE frames vistas of its seaside setting, and a circular ceiling interweaves a slanting wall to compose a focal point reminiscent of a watch hand falling out of its dial.
Textured black paint sets the tone for the interior design, which nods to each of the seasons through distinctive colors. White hues recall the fog and distant snow-capped hills common in Shantou during the winter. Notes of gold nod to the transformative color of leaves in autumn, while hues of deep red transition to intense orange and yellow shades before melting into azure and black akin to a summer sunset. Finally, refreshing moments of green reinforce the invigoration of nature in spring.
