Described as a “restaurant that revolves around a bar,” Shanghai Love Brewing Co. has unveiled a flagship location in Shanghai, China that pays homage to the beer brand’s legacy.
The nearly 1,300-square-foot space evokes a nostalgic, retro-inspired flair through design envisioned by locally based Q&A Studio. “The focus was to highlight Shanghai Love’s lifestyle and to let the guests experience the brand,” says Q&A architect Michele Armando. “It was to become a funky yet refined local hangout spot that could both provide an elevated brunch experience, but also a relaxed and fun venue for grabbing a beer amongst friends.”
Fellow architect Gianmaria Quarta adds: “Our idea was to create a strong contrast between the surrounding historical building and the strong personality of the interior design, enhanced by the typical red color.”
Two beer staplers rise from the ground akin to large red fountains, informing the overall spatial concept for a lofty interior illuminated by suspended Edison lights. Industrial elements—like exposed pipes that deliver beer from the cellar and the central bar—are punctuated by the same red hue of the Shanghai Love logo and branding.
To offset the red steel bar, geometric black and white tiles are installed across the floor. Two large windows are also openable to introduce natural light and limit barriers between indoors and outdoors.
