Tesla’s Cybertruck gets a garage of its own, Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo dreams up costumes for a Viennese opera, and an artist reimagines the unused spaces at a Zaha Hadid-designed museum. This and more in this week’s Five.
Rei Kawakubo designs avant-garde costumes for Viennese Opera
Comme des Garçons founder and chief designer Rei Kawakubo has created costumes for the Vienna State Opera’s production of Virginia Woolf’s Orlando, marking the Japanese designer’s first time creating costumes for the stage, writes Dezeen. The pieces follow a collection of ideas at Paris Fashion Week in June and a Comme des Garçons ready-to-wear collection launched in September, evoking an ethereal charm of romanticism, relativity of time, and androgyny. Inspired by Woolf’s classic novel, Kawakubo’s transformative pieces, described as “hyperbolic silhouettes,” feature a rich blend of references, from punk to Baroque.
A garage of Cybertruck’s own
It only makes sense that Tesla’s recently announced Cybertruck (the internet’s favorite joke) would need a custom garage, too. Elon Musk tasked New York-based research and design company Lars Büro with conceiving a home, aptly named the Cyberunker, for the electric pickup truck, according to Fast Company. The 1,800-square-foot aerodynamic, modular shelter is wrapped in a steel monocoque core and features a motherboard within that is home to computer systems, cisterns, pumps, and a battery bank that stores energy generated on the roof’s PV cladding, making the design self-sustaining.
Lauren Henkin’s exhibition pays tribute to a Zaha Hadid-designed museum
For her show Props, photographer and sculptor Lauren Henkin pays homage to the Zaha Hadid-designed Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, Ohio with eight interventions in the building’s interior, “building a compelling dialogue between artist and architecture,” writes Architectural Digest. Mostly made of construction materials like lumber, pipes, and wires coming from the utility closets of the museum, the series aim to disrupt the viewer’s attention while paying homage to Hadid’s genius. “This project has opened up a world of thought and possibility for me to progress with this idea of encouraging people to think about their own definitions of art, and should we confine the viewing of art to a specific type of place, the possibilities are endless,” she told the magazine.
Warner Bros.’ first hotel will land in Abu Dhabi
Entertainment giant Warner Bros. will debut its first-ever hotel in the Yas Island of Abu Dhabi in 2021. Located adjacent to the company’s theme park, the WB Abu Dhabi will celebrate the extensive TV and film archives of Warner Bros. Developed in partnership with development firm Miral, the outpost will join Warner’s portfolio of tourist attractions, including the sets of Harry Potter movies in London and Parque Warner Madrid in Spain. According to Forbes, the new hotel will put the company one step closer to challenging theme park titans Disney and Universal.
Montréal dry cleans in style
Why not give dry cleaners the hospitality treatment? That’s exactly what IVYSTUDUIO had in mind when conceiving the upscale, very chic Les Nettoyeurs White’s in Montréal, raising the bar for how a dry-cleaning shop could look like. The 800-square-foot space is modeled after a Parisian apartment with an all-white interior enlivened by brass and black accents, handmade floor tiles, and the brand’s eco-friendly products, which are displayed on 14-foot-tall built-in shelving accessed by a custom ladder.
