Bulgari Hotels & Resorts has planted its latest international flag in Japan with the opening of Bulgari Hotel Tokyo. Spread across the 40th and 45th floors of the new Tokyo Midtown Yaesu skyscraper, the luxury hotel comprises 98 elegant guestrooms and suites.
Milan-based architectural studio Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel crafted the property’s opulent design narrative. “We wanted to combine the Italian and Bulgari sensibility with local sensitivity,” Patricia Viel says. “We decided to reveal the more feminine dimension of the Japanese culture, with the use of delicate and refined details, mingled with Italian style.”
To synthesize Bulgari’s distinctive, contemporary Italian ethos with Japanese design traditions, elements like hinoki woods and artisanal fabrics sourced from Kyoto were incorporated along with Bulgari-style orange silk details. The lobby also reveals itself to guests as a sequence of portals reminiscent of the brand’s Rome boutique, which itself was based on 1920s drawings depicting the apparatus rooms of the Imperial City from the 17th century.
Signature spaces include a luxury spa and the Bulgari Bar and Terrace Gardens on the hotel’s 45th-floor rooftop, while the 4,300-square-foot Bulgari Suite serves as the centerpiece of the guestroom offerings. “Our aim was to create a place of elegance where guests can find not just comfort and luxury, but also a sense of warm homeliness,” Viel adds. “Nowadays, luxury means quality of life.”
