Independent hospitality brand Orli has introduced its first concept, Orli La Jolla, within a former residence designed by Irving Gill, the father of California modernism.
Situated in San Diego’s La Jolla suburb, the 13-room retreat was transformed by cofounders Hailey and Max Waitt in partnership with Axon Architecture and ML Design Co. to accentuate its historic architectural character and nod to the local landscapes. “It was important that we pay homage to both the architectural prominence, as well as the area’s iconic surroundings,” says Maddie Lord, principal designer for ML Design Co. “Every inch of the hotel has been designed with intentionality and deep care for the history of the space and the experience of the discerning traveler. Our goal was to create a uniquely enchanting boutique hotel that would emulate the special and iconic neighborhood that it is located in.”
Guests arrive via a lobby adorned with custom chandeliers, wood detailing, and brass sideboard elements. Functioning as the nucleus of the property, a courtyard lined with century-old olive trees bond Orli La Jolla’s two buildings: the George Kautz House with the Kate Sessions House, which share an arch motif and abundant green marble. A versatile lounge and a library equipped with a brew bar also serve as social hubs.
Each of the guestrooms and suites are distinguished with an individualistic expression of the La Jolla lifestyle. Clean, high-contrast interiors are warmly decorated with different tasteful quirks—from typewriters to record players—that echo a residential-style approachability as well. Lord adds, “We wanted guests to feel that they have entered into a refined and luxurious space steeped in history, leaving them inspired and rejuvenated.”
