San Diego’s Pearl Hotel Debuts Redesign

Published: June 23, 2020

The unmistakable aesthetic of the 1960s motor lodge shines at the newly renovated Pearl Hotel in San Diego. The 23-room boutique concept features public spaces conceived by Venice Beach, California-based Electric Bowery and accommodations designed by Human Kind Design Studio.

A midcentury flair permeates through the hotel, with a refreshed palette that references its coastal setting. Anchored by an oyster-shaped pool, the property welcomes visitors through a lobby outfitted with custom Italian-inspired leather sectionals, glass pendants, jewel-toned accents, and marble bistro tables. In the lounge, a crystal green quartzite–topped bar is installed against a backdrop of handmade ceramic tiling and custom walnut millwork.

Each guestroom is adorned with neutral tones and organic textures like linen drapery, slab cotton headboards, cane-back chairs, handcrafted ceramic lamps, and flat-woven rugs in shades of sand, ivory, brown, and taupe. Solid wood furnishings and vintage artwork that pays homage to Japan’s female ‘Ama’ pearl divers also punctuate the accommodations.
