Coinciding with its 16th anniversary, the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman has reopened following a thorough renovation by Champalimaud Design. The refined and refreshed environment is ripe with cultural references to the Cayman Islands—blending modern coastal elegance with midcentury British Caribbean style.
“We focused intently on incorporating local elements into the design to ensure we retained its sense of place, while imbuing a more youthful and chic spirit,” says Champalimaud senior associate Courtney Brannan. “The intentional narrative of honoring local traditions, art, artisans, and employing local manufacturers and fabricators creates an unparalleled experience that is truly unique to the island and the property itself.”
While much of the property’s original architecture was retained, the revamped interiors are characterized by an updated color palette of blues reminiscent of the night sky, lively shades of botanical green, glistening turquoise, and whites and beiges the reinforce the surrounding beaches. Textured materials, dramatic contrasting tones, and vibrant hues also characterize the reimagined destination.
Upon arrival, ebonized wood arches punctuate the lobby lounge with a majestic flair. Indigenous materials are showcased in public areas like the Silver Palm Lounge, where a custom hardwood cabinet anchors the new space. Palatial meeting areas are defined by luminous neutrals and rich, warm accents adorning soaring ceilings and rope detailing on the wallcoverings. Light fixtures transpose undersea life to the ceilings as well, with sculptural coral colonies of organic forms with each dome a unique shape.
Accommodations nod to local history, particularly the rugged sophistication of British West Indian style, while also paying homage to the island’s colorful contemporary identity. Handpicked artwork, fixtures, and natural textures instill a sense of place. Walnut pieces with classic fluted detailing and bronze accents are offset by subtle rope elements conveyed by the light fixtures—both of which further highlight the craftsmanship of Cayman-based artisans.
