New York-based architecture and design firm Rockwell Group has announced that it will spearhead the development of the Olio hotel, which is slated to rise in Manhattan’s theater district. Poised for a 2020 opening, the 27-story hotel is conceived as a hub for travelers, locals, and the theater community.
“Olio pays homage to and celebrates the vibrancy of New York City’s theater district. Like Broadway, which is constantly reinventing itself, the hotel’s art program will present new exhibitions every six months showcasing artwork from theater artists of all disciplines,” says firm founder and president David Rockwell, who also serves as an Olio partner. “Ultimately, our goal is to imbue Olio with a strong sense of both theatricality and hospitality. The concept celebrates the many facets of Broadway productions, and honors the iconic bygone theater haunts such as The Polish Tea Room, Stork Club, and Ted Hook’s Backstage.”
Marquee-inspired lighting will herald the arrival of the property at the corner of 48th Street and 8th Avenue. The 116-room hotel’s location will inspire details like dramatic curtains and raw industrial elements that recall backstage life. Transformative set and stage-like elements will also be featured, while each guestroom will mirror the aesthetic of a dressing room. A team of curators will also infuse a Broadway flair across the interior with a collection of sketches, design concepts, photography, costumes, and digital artwork that captures the enduring style and legacy of the Great White Way. The Stage Door Canteen is set to become the centerpiece of the onsite amenities. Located on the second floor, the bar and lounge will channel the cabarets of the early 20th century and serve as a pop-up performance venue as well.
