The Shoals is the latest waterfront hotel to debut on Long Island’s North Fork. Overlooking the Peconic Bay in Southold, the Shoals distinguishes itself as a “boatel,” housing 20 suites and 20 boat slips. The unique property was designed by architect Thomas Juul-Hansen in homage to local nautical history with nods to New England modernism.
“The Shoals is more modern in its design, with natural elements and light used to soften the spaces,” Juul-Hansen says. “Throughout the property, we used natural materials and a color palette reflective of the surrounding environment to create a connection between the rooms and the marina.”
Vistas are framed via large windows that bond interior spaces with the landscape. Beyond a façade of cedar shingles, the Shoals is lined with oak flooring and custom maritime elements—like headboards outfitted with rope materials.
Spacious apartment-style suites are enlivened with local greenery, modular furniture, and light wood surfaces. Bespoke kitchenettes are featured in each chamber along with an open-concept living area that’s populated by a marble coffee table, roomy sofa, and statement chair. Private terraces or balconies are also attached.
A bait shop and versatile lounge and bar round out the public spaces.
