Thompson Hotels has announced plans to launch the Thompson Zihuatanejo later this year along Playa La Ropa on Mexico’s Pacific coast. The luxury resort will be the Thompson brand’s third Mexican outpost, joining two units in Playa del Carmen.
Locally based interior design firm Andres Saavedra Design will collaborate with the in-house team at Thompson to marry traditional Mexican architecture with a contemporary, midcentury-style flair. A lobby sculpture crafted from wood and molten brass will welcome visitors, while handwoven Mexican rugs, traditional mosaic tiles, local stone finishes, Oaxacan clay fixtures, artisanal accents, and Parota furnishings will furnish both public spaces and all 54 suites. Each accommodation will feature a cool palette of light grays and charcoals accented with taupe tones. Local woods will infuse warmth against an outdoor backdrop of gardens, while private infinity plunge pools overlooking the property’s freshwater lagoon will join most suites.
F&B options will include the open-air Ceniza restaurant, which will be wrapped in black concrete tiles and illuminated by a custom, metal light installation. The nightlife concept HAO will open at the resort’s adults-only pool, complete with focal points including a large mural and handmade cement green and black tiling.
