Palazzo Gattini, the latest addition to the VRetreats collection—VOIhotels’ luxury brand—offers an immersive experience for connoisseurs of Italian art, history, and culture.
Atop Matera’s highest point, Palazzo Gattini overlooks the storied Sassi, a UNESCO-listed labyrinth of ancient cave dwellings. The palazzo, originally the noble residence of the Gattini Counts, was restored by late architect Ettore Mocchetti before debuting as a luxury hotel in 2008.
Inside Palazzo Gattini
The hotel features 20 accommodations, including suites, junior suites, and deluxe rooms. An exclusive suite, with a private swimming pool and panoramic terrace views of Murgia Materana park, is also offered.
Interiors are clad in locally sourced Mazzaro stone, reinforcing a deep connection to Matera’s centuries-old architectural legacy. Furnishings crafted by regional artisans further enhance the sense of place, while ambient lighting creates an atmosphere of serenity.
Additional amenities
The spa, set within ancient caves and cisterns, offers a retreat with a swimming pool and massage area carved from stone.
Dining options include Le Bubbole and Duomo Café, while event spaces consist of a picturesque rooftop garden and the historic Malvinni-Malvezzi Church, formerly the private chapel of the Gattini family.
“The addition of Palazzo Gattini to the VRetreats collection underlines our commitment to showcase Italy’s notable locales, such as Matera, one of the most popular cities in the south in terms of foreign visitors, which has also been growing steadily in recent years with domestic guests,” says Paolo Terrinoni, CEO of VOIhotels. “Our mission is to offer an authentic luxury experience—a warm welcome and deep immersion in local culture and beauty.”
Since its inception in 2021, VRetreats has grown into a collection of nine hotels and historic residences across Italy.
