Australian design firm Landini Associates has revealed its design of the new Aldi Corner Store, a small-format retail model crafted for the popular German grocery store. The new concept’s locations will be designed to evoke a localized flair that celebrates its community through strategic art partnerships.
“We wanted to create a solution that is both a design signature and memorably Aldi, but also something truly different,” says Mark Landini, creative director of Landini Associates. “We have ensured that each Aldi Corner Store will be recognizable and distinct, both in the design parameters and in this first store by commissioning a unique artwork.”
Located in North Sydney, the maiden Aldi Corner Store builds upon the success of the large-format Aldi Australia supermarkets, which the design studio also conceived. Vibrant artwork by Sydney artist Mulga animates the façade and interiors of the inaugural location, and reimagines retail graphics from wayfinding to uniforms. A sustainable materiality of pale brick, white tiles, blockwork, terrazzo, black steel, and galvanized steel mesh will characterize each Aldi Corner Store, while timber palettes, oak, and walnut will infuse warmth.
“The Aldi brand is known for innovation and a true dedication to customer needs, and the design of Aldi Corner Store represents this approach in action,” adds Landini Associates design director Wayne Cheng. “We’re thrilled to be a part of the team behind such an exciting new offering that foregrounds healthy choices and Australian products, and that creates a welcoming, fun, and highly functional shopping environment.”
