Lawrence R. Armstrong, CEO and artist at Irvine, California-based multidisciplinary design firm Ware Malcomb, has revealed the design for a Post 9/11 War Memorial. Under development with the Welcome Home Troops nonprofit, the design is conceived as a mobile installation that will travel across the U.S. in remembrance of the military service men and women who have died serving overseas following the attacks on September 11th, 2001.
The pavilion is 30 feet in diameter and rest on a platform of approximately 70 feet by 100 feet. The circular memorial will feature exterior glass panels inscribed with the names of lost. The pavilion will rest atop a stainless steel platform, designed to be easily disassembled and reconstructed. The interior of the structure will be equipped with digital video display boards, which will feature a variety of projections uploaded by members of each serviceman commemorated.
“It was a humbling assignment, but I was inspired by the idea of honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in fighting the war on terror,” Armstrong says. “The layered glass panels on the exterior represent the fragility of human life and the layers of emotion that our military families feel. The reflective and multifaceted nature of the memorial as a whole evokes the emotional layers that we all experience. It was an honor for me to be a part of this project.”
