SB Architects and EDG Design joined forces to renovate Dr. Wilkinson’s Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs in Calistoga, California. The landmark’s update honors its storied commitment to natural materials and community, while serving as bridge between the property’s midcentury roots and contemporary wellness style.
“We were tasked with breathing new life into a beloved icon,” says SB Architects vice president and principal Bruce Wright. “Originally opened in the ’50s, the goal was to create a wellness destination that brings the past into the present with cool authenticity. Building on Dr. Wilkinson’s long, famed history, whilst introducing modern aesthetics, we wove the charm and a sense of place into the refreshed design.”
A calming neutral palette adorns the resort’s external wood siding to evoke a timeless appeal, and heritage elements—including existing terracotta walls—were retained to accentuate the property’s historic character. The redesigned lobby welcomes guests with a retro midcentury-inspired sensibility punctuated by custom artwork and a water tower that nods to the site’s mineral springs. Expansive outdoor areas, including open-air restaurant and bar House of Better, promote socialization and foster a bond to nature. Furthermore, the resort’s onsite spa was revitalized with the help of TLEE Spas to now include an outdoor courtyard and spa garden as well.
All 50 onsite accommodations have been reinvigorated, including bungalows and a Victorian bunkhouse that houses 15 guests. Guestrooms perpetuate the midcentury theme with white oak floors and a warm color palette accented by locally made ceramics and artwork.
