Apotheke, a popular speakeasy in New York’s Chinatown, has expanded its footprint in Manhattan with the launch of a bi-level location in NoMad. Designed by the late Christopher Tierney, the new Apotheke cocktail lounge embodies the theme of “ancient future” with a novel and nostalgic aesthetic inspired by Old World apothecaries.
“Apotheke NoMad brings a unique, Old World experience to a distinctly contemporary landscape,” says Tierney’s sister Heather, who served on the design. “The NoMad location reflects the legacy of its iconic heritage, showcasing outstanding hospitality, exquisite design, and innovative cocktails, thus establishing itself as one of the best in the city, if not the world.”
Apotheke is housed within a cellar speakeasy accessible by a stairwell lined with hundreds of dried herbs and wildflowers. Upon arrival, the 20-foot-long aurora marble bar glows like a beacon on the opposite end of the sexy, dim interior, while a handcarved, backlit backbar showcasing rows of colorful spirit bottles is a sinewy counterpoint. Low ceilings feature vaulted focal points clad with handcrafted wallpaper and mirrors as well.
A penthouse lounge and rooftop terrace crown the new outpost complete with an atrium equipped with a retractable roof for a greenhouse-style ambiance. Floor-to-ceiling windows of stained glass, also designed by Tierney, cast the lounge in a dramatic amber glow through the space at sunset, while the hypnotically backlit bar emits its own colorful smolder.
