Lucky Cheetah is now open beneath the cobblestone streets of Portland, Maine’s Old Port district.
A new concept from Portland natives Wills Dowd and Jared Dinsmore, the underground hideaway melds 1950s Monte Carlo decadence with the vibrant tastes and textures of Victorian-era Hong Kong to offer an unpretentious fine dining experience for dim sum enthusiasts and champagne lovers.
The 110-seat restaurant, crafted by local designer Susie Smith Coughlin, immerses diners in a maximalist, nostalgic world.
Bold red custom millwork by Sowell Associates anchors the space, while animal-print wallcoverings provide a backdrop for vintage photographs by Slim Aarons.
Banquets are upholstered with floral-patterned black velvet and vintage lighting accents Lucky Cheetah’s walls and ceilings.
In the private dining room, silk painted ceiling panels from the 1940s add a historic touch, as does the Victorian-era pattern of the black and white tile flooring in the bar area. The 10-seat bar, constructed from Italian pink stone, is marked with custom brass table lamps and black cane backed barstools.
Meanwhile, cool blue mirrored tiles in the washrooms conjures a jewel box effect.
