Hospitality brand CH Projects has reopened its original San Diego restaurant, Neighborhood, following a nearly two-year renovation. The beer-focused concept in the city’s East Village received a facelift by Brooklyn design firm Home Studios and informed by CH Projects founder Arsalun Tafazoli to honor industrial motifs and a rough-around-the-edges aesthetic.
“With the renovation of Neighborhood, we want to get back to the roots of the culture, and at the same time push the craft beer bar forward to an entirely new place,” Tafazoli says. “We think it can be more elegant and elevated, more of an immersive experience that honors the passion and vibrancy of the culture as we first experienced it, while reflecting on where we’ve been as a brand and our growth.”
Inspired by the Art Deco visual identity of Los Angeles eatery Gwen, the revamp includes an array of lines and shapes that punctuate an inviting, sandy backdrop. The intimate 16-seat cocktail bar serves as the main focal point of the interior, flanked by ceiling-height bar shelves, custom lighting, and Parisian carpeting.
Chicago’s Uncanned Music outfitted Neighborhood with a new acoustic environment that comprises a vintage sound system and vinyl library. A retail bottleshop was also added to the venue.
“We put an irrational level of detail into this project,” adds Tafazoli. “To think of where we started and where we are, on a personal level, it’s rewarding that we’ve been so supported by the San Diego community and beyond. I’m hoping there were enough weirdos like us who will appreciate it.”
