Hotel Indigo Pittsburgh East Liberty, part of the IHG Hotels & Resorts portfolio, is set to undergo an extensive renovation spearheaded by female-led firm Pickard Design Studio.
A sneak peek at the redesign
Originally an adaptive reuse project incorporating four 1940s buildings—including the former Governor Hotel—the 135-key property will feature interiors that honor East Liberty’s past.
Custom casegoods, lacquered finishes, and upholstered furnishings in the guestrooms will reference the area’s historic Automobile Row and Motor Square Garden, while corridors will showcase license plate-inspired signage and speedometer-patterned carpeting.
Beyond its industrial legacy, the redesign will also celebrate the neighborhood’s indigenous Shawnee heritage by incorporating Native American influences into artwork, rugs, and decorative accents.
Public spaces—from the foyer and study to the lounge and meeting rooms—will be reimagined with rich patterns, layered textures, and jewel-toned hues that draw inspiration from Pittsburgh’s historic row houses, cathedrals, and monuments.
Art at Hotel Indigo Pittsburgh East Liberty
Pickard Design Studio has partnered with San Diego-based JVA Art Group to curate a bespoke artwork collection that reflects the neighborhood’s storied past.
“East Liberty can best be described as a city of ‘boom, bust, and rebound,’ after overcoming many obstacles and turning a corner to a new chapter,” says Sarah Pickard, founder of Pickard Design Studio. “Hotel Indigo Pittsburgh East Liberty represented a fresh start for the city when it originally opened, and we look forward to giving it a facelift to reintroduce it to the neighborhood. This renovation will honor East Liberty’s golden era during the 1940s to today, creating a space that resonates with visitors and the local community.”
