Hotel Van Zandt, a boutique hotel in Austin’s historic Rainey Street district, is undergoing a lobby renovation. The revamp will also introduce a new bar concept, Brass Poppy.
The redesign of Hotel Van Zandt, which joined Sage Hospitality’s portfolio in 2022, is being led by MARKZEFF, the New York-based firm that also spearheaded the hotel’s original design.
Hotel Van Zandt’s lobby refresh
Inspired by the hotel’s eclectic style and the original bungalow houses lining Rainey Street, the first-floor redesign will incorporate jewel tones, antique brass, tooled leathers, and hand-tufted carpets sourced from Nepal.
The lobby will now offer intimate areas for guests to gather among artisanal and vintage furniture pieces, while the remaining space will be transformed into cocktail bar and lounge Brass Poppy.
The addition of Brass Poppy
The name Brass Poppy is inspired by the delicate yet resilient poppy flower, known for its ability to grow in adverse conditions. Pairing the boldness of brass with the quiet strength of the poppy, the design will embody the flower’s timeless beauty and resilience.
Alongside cozy bar and lounge seating, Brass Poppy will capture the essence of art nouveau forms through a metal installation adorning the bar.
“It’s been a privilege to return to Hotel Van Zandt for this renovation project,” says Stacie Meador, lead designer at MARKZEFF. “Drawing inspiration from Austin’s lively atmosphere, the reimagined lobby space and Brass Poppy weave in textures, hues, and materials that each tell a story and add a layer of depth to this iconic property.”
The renovations is set to debut this fall.
