The Kissel Uptown Oakland has debuted in the vibrant heart of Oakland, California. Spread across seven stories, the 168-room hotel is the latest entry in Hyatt’s Unbound Collection. The property’s contemporary design, executed by BAR Architects and Parisa O’Connell Interior Design, seamlessly integrates historical references, Art Deco elements, and the site’s historic 1910s Beaux Arts façade.
“Oakland has held onto the warm, casual feel that has always been a theme of California living,” says Parisa O’Connell. “With touches of early/midcentury modern furnishings, clean contemporary pieces and warm tones mixed with some reimagined deco architectural details, we were able to take a sampling Oakland’s wide-ranging legacy and create a space that should give visitors an authentic sense of [the city].”
The hotel’s curb appeal is boosted with a contemporary marquee, architectural glass fins, digitally printed artwork by Kelly Ording, and soaring windows that flood the lobby interior with natural light. An expansive lobby bar and café punctuates the arrival experience, where arched and curved details are showcased along with handmade columns clad with tiles. Faceted and fractured slab stone walls, serving as the backdrop for reception, introduce visitors to an Art Deco narrative infused with the industrial character of the former auto row.
A color palette comprising aubergine, natural greens, and blush tones is paired with natural materials to establish warmth and texture throughout. Wallpaper, fabrics, and other decorative accents are enlivened with nostalgic prints that create a vintage ambiance with a modern edge.
A trio of onsite eateries—including a rooftop bar and lounge and a French-inspired eatery—and more than 10,000 square feet of meeting and event space round out the amenities at Kissel Uptown Oakland. Further, guestrooms and suites are distinguished by glass globe chandelier fixtures, hardwood-style floors, custom area rugs, animated wallpapers, and colorful industrial tiles.
