Outdoor-focused hotel brand Trailborn has transformed the historic Blockade Runner Beach Resort in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina into its fourth location, Trailborn Surf & Sound.
“Trailborn is thrilled to uphold the legendary status of this coastal gem and create a higher quality experience that ensures the hotel continues to be a beloved spot for locals, while also meeting the evolving expectations of travelers,” says Mike Weiss, cofounder and co-CEO of Trailborn.
Updated public spaces and guestrooms
Post Company led the redesign of the resort’s public spaces, guestrooms, and F&B concepts, drawing inspiration from the property’s coastal setting. The refreshed exterior features white brick accents and Juliet balconies with views of the coastline and sound.
Upon arrival, guests are welcomed by a wood-accented entryway and a minimalist stone-clad reception desk. The lobby offers a relaxed yet sophisticated ambiance thanks to French doors that open to the beach, as well as artwork that reflects Wrightsville Beach’s coastal charm. A newly added retail market enhances the space with curated local goods as well.
The 151 redesigned guestrooms embrace maritime influences, incorporating rattan-accented benches, blue-detailed ceilings, and blue-hued tile flooring in the bathrooms. A subtle wave motif at the minibar and locally curated artwork further connect the interiors to the surrounding landscape.
F&B and event spaces at Trailborn Surf & Sound
The resort has debuted with several distinct dining options. La Duna Paradiso, a seafood-driven restaurant, blends patterned fabrics, oak floors, and patinated leather for a lively, inviting setting. Bar Duna, located in the lobby, offers a cozy yet refined atmosphere with a wooden bar, brass accents, textured terracotta flooring, vintage armchairs, and ceramic wall sconces. Meanwhile, Blockade Surf Bar provides a relaxed poolside escape, complete with reservable cabanas, pool loungers, bar seating, and lounge areas.
Trailborn Surf & Sound also features updated event venues, including the Tides Ballroom, the Sunset and Sunrise Rooms, the Great Lawn, and the Promenade—an outdoor space framed by oceanfront gardens. Across the street, Soundside provides an intimate lawn and dock for private gatherings, along with access to private cruises and water activities.
“Trailborn Surf & Sound will have so much to offer, including a one-of-a-kind location with both beach and sound access, elegantly designed guestrooms and spaces inspired by the region’s maritime heritage, and curated experiential programming perfect for enjoying the town’s incredible coastal activities and offerings,” says Ben Weinberg, cofounder and co-CEO of Trailborn.
