The American Airlines Admirals Club has been unveiled at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington, DC. Spread across 14,500 square feet, the new lounges were crafted by Chicago-based DMAC Architecture & Interiors as “pavilions in the park” that promote relaxation.
“American Airlines’s mission to care for their customers all throughout their journey is what truly inspired our overall vision for the Admirals lounges,” says DMAC founder and principal Dwayne MacEwen. “Just as parks are the repose to cities, the Admirals Club is the repose to the airport. The Club is conceived as a collection of thoughtfully designed spaces for guests to relax and recharge, and where many details—both large and small—are embedded with local narratives for a sense of place. Every place has a history and a story to tell and we often tell those stories through design.”
Among the “pavilions” is the Lounge Pavilion, where tall wood slats create an inner sanctuary anchored around a fireplace, while white tubes form a light-filled canopy in the Dining Pavilion. References to the DC landscape abound throughout the concept. Handmade pink blossoms in a sequence translated from “The Star-Spangled Banner” are suspended above custom carpeting patterned with an abstracted map of the city.
Sustainable elements also shine across the design. Renewable woods, for instance, infuse warmth and softness while stone and metal embody durability. High-efficiency LED lighting and window shades are programmed in response to the astronomical clock and adjusted for daylight and evening light levels.
