The centerpiece of Detroit’s historic Woodward Avenue, the much hyped 129-key Shinola Hotel opens this month. Expect an elegant and eclectic design from New York’s Gachot Studios and local practice Kraemer Design Group for the luxury good brand’s first hotel, which includes multiple F&B options and a 1,600-square-foot Shinola store.

Stonehill Taylor, INC Architecture & Design, Lubrano Ciavarra Architects, and Beyer Blinder Belle give new life to Eero Saarinen’s original 1962 Flight Center with the upcoming 505-room TWA Hotel at JFK Airport, which is “simultaneously luxurious and efficient, like a plane,” says Lubrano Ciavarra Architects cofounder Anne Marie Lubrano.

Anchored by a 60,000-square-foot gym, the luxury fitness company’s inaugural hotel will be the focal point of New York’s Hudson Yards development when it opens this year. Next up: a property in Downtown Los Angeles from London designer Tara Bernerd, planned for 2022.

Elsewhere in Manhattan, Yabu Pushelberg is teaming up with Ian Schrager to create an escape in the center of Times Square with the latest EDITION hotel, which will pay homage to interior designer Andree Putman’s use of black, white, and gray designs.

The Moxy brand has been making waves in the U.S. since its flagship Times Square property opened in 2017. Joining this property (as well as the Moxy Downtown) is the 349-room Moxy Chelsea, the second collaboration between Yabu Pushelberg and Rockwell Group. Blending botanically inspired design with Italian romance, the hotel will boast F&B concepts from Francesco Panella and TAO Group, including a glass-enclosed rooftop lounge.

Six Senses Hotels and Resorts is preparing for a slew of exciting openings this year, including the transformation of a 14th-century resort into the Six Senses Fort Barwara in India; its first North American property, the Six Senses New York, with a design from Bjarke Ingles Group (BIG); and the five-location Six Senses Bhutan (pictured) by Habita Architects that includes a Punakha, a recreation of a traditional farmhouse.

Featuring 10 luxury tents perched atop a grouping of boulders in the vast Namibian Desert, the remote Sonop resort from developer Zannier Hotels is set to open this spring with an aesthetic reminiscent of British colonialism.

Rottet Studio will reimagine iconic luxury retreat the Belmond Cap Juluca in Anguilla as a modern haven where timeless, sophisticated design meets modern comforts, including an infinity-edge pool, rustic beach bar the Cap Shack, and colorful botanical motifs.

Rottet Studio has also teamed up with Herzog & de Meuron and HKS on the Conrad Washington, DC, which will bring a chic, contemporary approach to the city when it opens in February.

March will see the arrival of the ultra-luxury Rosewood Hong Kong. With 322 guestrooms and 91 suites, the sophisticated design from Kohn Pendersen Fox Associates and Tony Chi will celebrate the brand’s progressive, refined spirit.

With 650 rooms, the Nhow Amsterdam RAI Hotel will be the largest in the Benelux when it opens this year. Led by Rem Koolhaas’ Dutch firm OMA, the exquisite design starts at the aluminum and glass-clad exterior, which resembles three stacked boxes.

Spanning 9,000 aces of lush terrain in Patagonia, Chile, the 5-Star luxury eco-resort Mari Mari Natural Reserve, which launched January 1st, includes six oceanfront villas and a master residence dressed in local textiles and stone. The lodge and spa area features wellness facilities, including yoga and meditation classes.

Ramping up development in the new year, Nobu Hotels, the brainchild of lauded chef Nobu Matsuhisa, Robert De Niro, and Meir Teper, is set to open five hotels in 2019, including properties in Chicago, Marbella, and Cabo San Lucas (with architecture by WATG) as well as Riyadh and Barcelona (pictured), both designed by Rockwell Group.

Architect Vitor Vilhena and designer Mónica Amorim are teaming up for Longevity’s third hotel in Algarve, Portugal, the 70-key Longevity Health & Wellness Hotel, slated for June. Along with panoramic views of the bay of Alvor, the eye-catching undulating exterior symbolizes the brand’s focus on harmony and balance.

With 12 hotels scheduled to open over the next two years, Virgin Hotels will open its second property in San Francisco this year with a design from Gensler and Axis/GFA Architecture + Design. Comprising 194 guestrooms, the Funny Library coffee shop, and the Commons Club restaurant and lounge, the hotel will showcase the brand’s cheeky, irreverent style.

Meyer Davis leads the design of the 168-room Dream Nashville, located on the city’s historic Printer’s Alley. Housed in two landmarked buildings, the property will offer more than five dining and nightlife options and weave in elements of the city’s rich music and entertainment history.

With sweeping views of the Sea of Cortez in Los Cabos, Mexico, Zadún will mark the fourth property in the prestigious Ritz-Carlton Reserve portfolio when it comes online this spring. Along with a 27-hole golf course, the property is appointed with 115 suites and villas (many with private plunge pools) along the steppes of the land.

In spring 2019, London’s iconic Covent Garden neighborhood will re-introduce the One Aldwych with a makeover that includes reimagined public spaces from Fabled Studio and residentially inspired guestrooms and suites from Robert Angell.

Launching in February, the bohemian influenced Santarena Hotel in Costa Rica sits between two of the island’s Pacific beaches in the tropical town of Las Catalinas. The 45-key hotel will feature a rooftop pool that cements its “pura vida” mantra.

The design-driven Generator brand has found success in Europe with properties like the eclectic Generator Amsterdam (pictured) from DesignAgency. Now, it has set its sights stateside with the recently opened 105-room Generator Miami from London-based Argent Design and the soon-to-open Generator DC from Dallas firm Studio 11 Design in the city’s buzzy Dupont Circle neighborhood.

Part of San Antonio’s the Arts Residences mixed-use complex on a stretch of the Riverwalk, the 30-story, 167-key hotel will boast designs from Houston firm Powers Brown Architecture and Guadalajara-based Amass & G. Amenities in Thompson’s signature upscale style.

While 2018 was a major year for AJ Capital Partners’ Graduate Hotels—its Bloomington outpost (pictured) opened in December—an influx of new properties are in the works for the college town-focused brand. 2019 will see openings in Columbia, South Carolina; Nashville; and Annapolis with locations in Palo Alto and Roosevelt Island, New York to follow in 2020.
