Marc Fornes, architect and founder of multidisciplinary Brooklyn-based firm THEVERYMANY, strikes a rare balance with his large-scale outdoor pavilion at the Suzhou Center in China. Delicate white aluminum forms ultra-thin, massive perforated structures that curve and intertwine while appearing to bubble up from the ground. The porous shell’s undulating surfaces create tunnels and pathways that allow for limitless play. “What impacts people the most is the edgelessness of the environment,” Fornes explains. “All the parts are white, and there are no regular angles to orient you. You have to learn how to experience the space.” The architect’s mission was to create something that would “divert people from their normal paths,” he says. “We think about the structure as a kind of vessel that transports you from the ordinary to some unforeseen world.”
