Hospitality Design magazine is honored to announce its 2023 Hotelier of the Year and Designer of the Year as part of the 19th annual HD Awards. This year’s honorees continue to elevate the industry by bringing new perspectives to hospitality with groundbreaking and beautiful creations.
Tara Bernerd, who is also serving on the judges panel for this year’s project awards, will be honored as the 2023 Designer of the Year. At the helm of London’s Tara Bernerd & Partners, Bernerd is an award-winning visionary behind some of the world’s most elegant hotels. Her portfolio includes a medley of properties for brands including Four Seasons, Belmond, and Rosewood. Tying each property together is Bernerd’s unmistakable knack for approachable luxury, a global sensibility, and interiors defined by a sense of place.
“Designer of the Year means a great deal, not only to me but the whole studio, and reflects my team’s efforts and energy,” Bernerd says of the recognition. “Waking up every day and loving what you do is rare, and receiving this is especially significant as we celebrate the 21st anniversary of Tara Bernerd & Partners. Our passion and commitment to hospitality design remains as strong as ever.”

Chief creative officer Kemper Hyers oversees creative direction and all aspects of design, spearheading the brand’s ongoing expansion. Hyers previously served as head of design for Starwood Capital Group, where he was integral to the creation of new brands 1 Hotels and Baccarat Hotels. “Design created to deliver magical service and empathetic gestures combined with the pride you feel from taking risks—this is the ideal life of the hotelier,” Hyers says. “And, if you can evolve the world of hotels as you do it, that’s the most rewarding piece of all.
