Brooklyn-based, female-owned brewing company TALEA Beer Co. has opened its fourth taproom in New York—this time at Manhattan’s iconic Bryant Park.
The new outpost marks the company’s second collaboration with two woman- and minority-helmed firms: ALA Studio (formerly Alda Ly Architecture) and Aerial Design & Build. (The all-female team first joined forces last year on TALEA’s West Village location.)
TALEA Bryant Park is imbued with rich colors and the same punchy, graphic qualities found on the brand’s beer cans. The indoor space was envisioned as TALEA’s take on a beer garden, emphasizing a garden element that root the location to the nearby park.
“Because of the brand’s personality and the neighborhood context, we knew TALEA’s version of a beer garden had to feel more like a beautiful courtyard than the typical backyard with kegs and corn hole,” says ALA Studio project director Marissa Feddema.
The interior is enveloped by deep, verdant green walls paired with colorful finishes and fixtures. Reminiscent of the architecture of the city’s public spaces and gardens, an arcade of powder-coated steel arches run along the depth of the space, flanked by niches covered in acoustic PET felt. The procession of arches is anchored by a glowing private dining space at the end.
An elongated quartz bar, fronted with mauve Mosa tiles, lines the left side of the space. The uplit backbar features taupe tiles that serve as a neutral backdrop for TALEA’s colorful cans and glassware.
Opposite the bar is an array of high- and low-top tables to accommodate different sized groups. Overhead, comet chandeliers are reminiscent of the ones found in the adjacent New York Public Library.
“The design process with TALEA was very collaborative and our teams found an amazing synergy,” says Alda Ly, founder and principal of ALA Studio. “[The owners], Tara and LeAnn, have a thoughtful understanding of their customers and were very intentional about wanting to create a taproom that welcomed and celebrated everyone.”
