Three acres of Colorado’s historic Old Town Winter Park have been newly reinvigorated with the launch of A-Frame Club. The 1970s-inspired mountainside retreat comprises 31 A-frame cabins and a revitalized saloon crafted by Skylab Architecture and design studio Wunder Werkz.
“We had two main goals with the project: to create a sense of escape and nostalgia and to give the guest a closer connection with the natural environment,” says Wunder Werkz owner and creative director Jon Hartman. “It was also designed specifically to evoke a bygone era: the golden era of skiing. Alpine lodging today is often sterile, it lacks character, we wanted to give folks an experience that was filled with character and personal touches and frankly, felt playful and provocative.”
Beyond the Saloon restaurant, which serves as the convivial nucleus of the site, each 475-square-foot cabin reanimates the ’70s with vintage furnishings and midcentury typographic motifs and classic ads. Tactile custom finishes—including breeze blocks, bespoke woodwork, stained glass, leather upholstery, and even Noguchi-style lighting—emphasize craftsmanship while natural elements like cedar infuse a sense of warmth. “We wanted people to feel that this space was a place to unwind but also to party,” Hartman adds. “It had to feel inviting but not too precious.”
