Five century-old warehouses in the Granary District of Salt Lake City have been reborn as the evo Hotel, a unique lodging concept inspired by the active outdoor lifestyles promoted in Utah. Outdoor gear brand evo partnered with Lake Union Partners on the 50-room project, which was crafted by locally based Lloyd Architects and Portland-based design studio Vida Design to reinforce the allure of nature and the historic roots of the site.
“The design of evo Hotel delivers a distinctive, earthy elegance that feels very much like an extension of the evo brand. You might be a sporty, outdoor adventure enthusiast, but you also want a nice place to stay, appreciate art and great furniture, and enjoy world travel,” says Vida founder and CEO Rachel Sowieja. “Evo has a deep understanding of this type of traveler and brings the whole lifestyle together beautifully in the design of this development.”
The legacy of the neighborhood is also channeled through the property, where details like exposed trusses and original painted lettering adorning brick walls highlight history and promote discovery. Local craftsmanship is showcased as well in public spaces like the upstairs Living Room, which composes a bohemian vibe with vintage rugs, inviting sofas, and colorful murals. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the two-story lobby frame views of the city and its mountainous backdrop as does a rooftop cocktail bar. The arrival experience is further punctuated by a two-story mural crafted by Adam Clark as well as a disco chandelier that will contextualize the mezzanine. “These design elements are meant to tap into guests’ passions for the outdoors and recreation, and spark conversation and connection among the travelers and locals at the hotel,” Sowieja adds.
Durable materials abound in guestrooms, which comprise a range of configurations to accommodate everyone from families to solo travelers. Cozy cabin-style interiors are outfitted with lightbox action photography in Rafter rooms, while Boulder Rooms, designed with climbers in mind, include pegboard headboards. Also available are Bunk Rooms, Wasatch Rooms—featuring private balconies—and a specialized suite endowed with sectional sofas, a dining area, and a listening studio.
