Renaissance Hotels has expanded its footprint with the addition of the Renaissance New York Chelsea Hotel. The 39-story hotel, located at the former site of the Antiques Garage flea market, is the brand’s first outpost in the chic Manhattan neighborhood.
Locally based architecture and interior design firm Stonehill Taylor oversaw the project. The design scheme juxtaposes the industrial qualities of the setting with the antique and floral accents characteristic of Chelsea.
The hotel features a sleek glass façade, and the lobby is punctuated by a two-story wall sculpture by New York City–based artist Laura Morrison that is composed of knobs, keys, and locks.
All 341 guestrooms and suites feature a mostly earth-toned color palette and printed wallcoverings that resemble wood paneling. Playful details like gnome desk lamps and rabbit coat hooks add whimsy to the chambers, while the garden shed–inspired bathrooms include concrete sinks and porcelain tiling.
The rooftop pool and bi-level lounge, Somewhere Nowhere, spans 5,516 square feet of the property. The indoor portion of the lounge is accessed via a hidden, ground-floor passageway, and recalls a repurposed loading dock with spray-painted murals, neon signage, and lantern sconces.
The Renaissance New York Chelsea Hotel’s Italian restaurant, Cotto, is set to arrive early spring. The airy eatery—comprising a family-style dining room, lounge, and 14-seat bar—features floor-to-ceiling windows, exposed wood beams, and mason jar sconces.
