The Rosewood Sand Hill in California’s Silicon Valley has revealed updates to its lobby and guestrooms. The refresh by San Francisco-based design studio NICOLEHOLLIS conjures comfort and community through an artistic lens.
“We wanted to create a plan that flows easily from the interior to the exterior terraces and spaces to entertain or relax,” says Brandon Asbury, director of hospitality for NICOLEHOLLIS. “We were really lucky that the existing plans were laid out nicely, so we were able to hone in on the selection of textured and rich material palette.”
The revamp aims to defy the standards of business travel by instilling public spaces with a greater intimacy. These commons areas are populated with sofas and tables apt for dining or coworking. Nuanced shades of green and blue echo the tones of the Santa Cruz Mountains, as well as organic materials including reclaimed oak floors, stained cedar cladding, and brushed granite. “The property stands in the heart of a natural setting with contrasting tones of the countryside yet close to the urban draw of Silicon Valley, so the design complements both with refined details and rich textured materials,” Asbury adds.
Heavy handwoven textiles, like bespoke wool carpets, also adorn the interiors in contrast to conventional axminster carpeting. Vintage and locally crafted furnishings and light fixtures add an artisanal touch. Onsite eatery Madera now boasts a custom walnut and navy lacquer bar cabinet as well.
Accommodations provide a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces with terraces attached to each unit. The palette of each guestroom remains light and invigorating, while suites are endowed with a moodier color story. Both configurations are punctuated by personal bars crafted to resemble vintage travel trunks, composed of natural walnut and an interior of matte lacquer, bronzed mirror, and leather details.
