Standard International’s global domination continues with the launch of its Asia flagship: The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon. The 155-room urban retreat evokes a convivial air in the downtown area of Thailand’s capital, and serves as a gateway to the wealth of attractions in Old Town Bangkok. Crafted by the Standard’s in-house design team, the hotel draws upon the city’s legacy as a cultural melting pot for freeform artistic expression.
“We’ve created an atmosphere where both locals and our guests from around the world feel at home,” says Verena Haller, chief design officer at the Standard. “Our goal is always for guests to experience a strong sense of place, fun, and leisure without needing to leave the property. Art and folklore were great inspirations, as well. We scoured the city to find beautiful local antique pieces to be incorporated throughout the interiors.”
Nods to the city’s artistic history begin in the lobby, where traditional materials and large rattan lamps made locally instill a sense of place. The brand again partnered with Spanish artist and designer Jaime Hayon to weave vibrancy across the interiors by reinterpreting cultural cues and incorporating the influence of nature. “When you enter Thailand, you encounter the most incredible natural flora everywhere. We reflected this feeling throughout the hotel’s design, making it a green oasis in the heart of urban Bangkok,” Haller adds. “The use of materiality in an exaggerated way is also key. We utilized a combination of materials that are highly functional yet also give richness to the interiors.”
In addition to amenities like a 24-hour fitness center, four meeting rooms, and a serene pool overlooking the city, the Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon is home to six distinctive F&B options, including the brand’s American brasserie concept, the Standard Grill. Housed across the hotel’s 76th floor is Mexican restaurant Ojo, which is distinguished by whimsical design inspired by ancient Mexican civilizations. Rooftop bar Sky Beach boasts panoramic views from the 78th floor, while Chinese eatery Mott 32 Bangkok is equipped with an open-air terrace lined with lush greenery. A graphic black and white bijoux tearoom comprises Tease, an eccentric dive included among the onsite lineup. Finally, the Parlor invites guests to indulge in authentic Thai comfort food alongside live performance and other social programming.
Bold, glamorous touches characterize each accommodation, which are populated with retro-style furniture and softly lit bar areas. Totaling 1,550 square feet, the Bigger Penthouse serves as the centerpiece of the guestroom offerings, complete with sumptuous upholstery, a full kitchen, ensuite bathroom equipped with a soaking tub, and a variety of indoor plants.
