Tasked with converting a less than idyllic 1980s Balearic structure into W Hotels’ latest outpost, Amsterdam-based architecture practice Baranowitz + Kronenberg (B+K) jumped at the chance to revive and modify the building, while crafting a strong sense of place on Ibiza’s beachfront. “We set out to create a hotel that bridges the relaxed pace and cosmopolitan attitude of Santa Eulalia with the iconic, ecstatic character of the W brand,” explains Alon Baranowitz, cofounder of B+K, which collaborated with local studio GSA on W Ibiza.

To pay homage to the Spanish island’s heritage and capture its bohemian spirit, the firm developed a ‘Flower Power’ narrative that “became the guiding light throughout the design process and encapsulated every choice—both large and small—we made,” says B+K cofounder Irene Kronenberg. The approach resulted in a bold, playful palette characterized by minimal, subdued materials paired with colors and textures inspired by the local culture—all with the goal of “letting the sunshine in and having light and shade play upon the architecture and the interiors,” says Baranowitz.

The property’s interior design pays homage to Ibiza’s heritage and free spirit

The designers’ vision is perhaps best celebrated on the light-filled ground floor, where amphitheater platforms are outfitted with a variety of seating options sprinkled with colorful throw pillows. The dramatic ascending space promotes connection and engagement—a concept that is woven throughout the rest of the property, which boasts 162 guestrooms and suites, a rooftop pool and bar, and a 4,000-square-foot spa and gym.

“W Ibiza is very different than anything else on the island,” says Baranowitz, “and we feel very proud to be part of the chronicles of Ibiza and part of the stories people take back home with them.”
