The Malin, a network of work-focused members clubs, has opened in the South Gulch neighborhood of Nashville, marking their second location in the city following The Malin Wedgewood Houston that opened last year.
The 12,000-square-foot space features 58 dedicated desks, seven private offices, five meeting rooms, 10 phone booths, a library, and a kitchen.
The new location is the first time the brand has enlisted an exterior design firm to reimagine its club’s aesthetics. Dublin-based practice Róisín Lafferty brings a fresh perspective to The Malin’s distinct design language, honoring the vibrancy of Music City and harnessing the energy of the young neighborhood.
The club is set within the historic Voorhees building, where members are greeted by a striking reception desk upon entry.
Once inside, oversized forms and objects blur the lines of art and furniture, adding a playful layer to the space. A post-industrial feel, which echoes the surrounding neighborhood, is achieved via cement flooring layered with accent rugs and exposed ductwork. The principal pattern, informed by local architecture, is refined into a graphic, timeless stripe.
“I wanted to ensure the vibrancy and energy of The Malin shone through, combined with a punchiness and boldness we are known for,” Lafferty notes. “There is a deliberate sense of theater and showmanship in the design, epitomizing the location of the building.”
Sunlight floods the space via panoramic grid windows surrounding the perimeter of the club, which is also punctuated by luminaire accent lamps, table top lights, and pendants that modernize the revitalized original ceiling.
Across the communal spaces, surfaces crafted in solid oak, marble, and limestone create a warm-yet-luxurious ambiance. Furniture upholstered in leather and textiles complement casegoods finished in high-gloss lacquer, burl wood, and marble. Texture also adds dimension throughout the outpost. Rippled amber crystal, for instance, acts as desk dividers in amber, while steel and bronze mirrored surfaces are employed, too.
