For the ultra-luxury brand’s Manhattan debut, Aman’s frequent collaborator Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston sought to bring serenity to Beaux-Arts icon the Crown Building. At the core of the 83-suite and 22-residence property is its nearly 25,000-square-foot spa. Spanning three floors, it stars a 65-foot-long pool and Spa Houses on the 10th floor, each appointed with a spacious living area and an outdoor terrace flaunting a warm bath and plunge pool covered by a year-round canopy.

Hotel Marcel, New Haven, Connecticut

The iconic Marcel Breuer building in New Haven was revived as an all-electric, net-zero 165-room hotel designed to meet Passive House and LEED Platinum certification. Part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection, it’s both a reintroduction of Brutalism to the public—with restrained interiors by Dutch East Design that are tactile and approachable—as well as a future model for sustainable hotel development.

Pendry Washington DC – The Wharf

Regent Phu Quoc, Kien Giang, Vietnam

Against the verdant backdrop of Vietnam’s Phu Quoc island, Blink Design Group crafted the Regent Phu Quoc, home to 176 suites and 126 villas. Guided by the surrounding landscape and the country’s architectural heritage, the team embraced the duck eggshell inlays for which the region is known; abstracted the local wooden truss system called bovi into a motif that appears on carpets and screens; and incorporated more than 200 pools that magnify the Gulf of Thailand’s ethereal presence.

Marriott Bethesda Downtown at Marriott HQ, Maryland

Kimpton’s global expansion continues apace with the opening of the 138-room Kimpton Kitalay Samui, located on the white sand beaches of Thailand’s Choeng Mon Beach. Considering its prime location overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, the property is imbued with a natural beauty that is at once relaxed and residential but still shows off the brand’s vibrant personality.

1 Hotel Nashville

The 215-room 1 Hotel Nashville opened this year, alongside its San Francisco sibling, as a design tour de force that highlights what the sustainably minded brand does best: a layered aesthetic that shines a spotlight on local craftsmanship. With nature as a muse, the property celebrates Tennessee’s Smoky Mountains and the Cumberland River Valley with elements like reclaimed wood; a reception desk formed from water-worn boulders; and the 800-foot-high ivy façade that generates oxygen and regulates the building’s temperature in addition to enhancing its curb appeal.

The Twenty Two, London

The revamped Edwardian manor is a lesson in maximalism, spanning 31 guestrooms, a mews house, an all-day restaurant, and a private members club that the owners envisioned for the creative local set. Past the intimate cabochon marble-floored lobby is the centerpiece restaurant, swathed in four shades of custom blue that lend the 19th-century paneling a fresh perspective.

Moxy NYC Lower East Side

Moxy’s newest location from the Lightstone Group to sprout in New York is the 303-room Lower East Side outpost. Five F&B concepts by Tao Hospitality Group pay homage to the pleasure gardens and vaudeville theaters that once lined the Bowery. In addition to the greenery-filled Highlight Room on the rooftop, the Michaelis Boyd-designed all-day bar and café the Fix features 3D-printed pinup girls that sway from chandeliers in burlesque poses, while Rockwell Group tapped into ’80s punk culture for Japanese restaurant Sake No Hana, which greets visitors with staircases framed by tapestries that recall kimonos.

Ace Hotel Sydney

Ace Hotel Group’s busy 2022 started with the opening of the Ace Hotel Sydney, its first in Australia (the brand’s Toronto location joined the portfolio this summer). Located in the historic Tyne Building, the 257-room hotel evokes an authentic experience with a design that nods to the neighborhood’s cultural legacy as a major pottery producer. To that end, the building is awash in ceramics, a color palette of ochre and burnt orange, and paintings by Indigenous artists, all reflecting the laidback ambiance of the Australian suburbs in the 1970s.

Nine Orchard, New York

A motley team of design collaborators has transformed the more-than-a-century-old Jarmulowsky Bank Building straddling the Lower East Side and Chinatown into the 116-room Nine Orchard hotel. Vaulted ceilings and original stones remain intact, but the hotel is infused with a contemporary energy, felt most vividly in the food and drink offerings from Mattos Hospitality, including Corner Bar and the Swan Room, the cocktail lounge situated in the soaring hall where tellers once worked.

Hotel La Compañía, Panama City, Panama

The 88-room Hotel La Compañía, the first Central American property in Hyatt’s Unbound Collection, doubles as a museum. The complex, deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site, comprises the Spanish Colonial wing, a former Jesuit convent showcasing restored stone walls; the French Colonial wing, the site of Panama’s first university, which marries all-white interiors with intricate ceiling moldings; and the American Beaux-Art wing, a one-time department store that beckons with a classic black and white palette and wainscoting.

RH Guesthouse New York

Located in a late-19th-century building in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District (not far from the RH showroom), the nine-room hideaway from furnishings brand RH mixes European oak with wool-velvet upholstery, as well as Italian travertine daybeds on the rooftop garden, pool, and dining terrace. In addition to a restaurant on the first floor, RH Chairman and CEO Gary Friedman’s personal apartment crowns the building and is sometimes available for guests. Dubbed the Residence, the 2,600-square-foot penthouse features Corinthian columns and 11-foot-high coffered ceilings.

Ulysses, Baltimore, Maryland

The theatrical hotel, housed in a former apartment building from 1912 in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood, is a love letter to both travel and the city (the Ulysses was the ship that brought Bavarian immigrants to Baltimore). It incorporates, for instance, a flamingo motif that references local filmmaking legend John Waters. In the 116 guestrooms, beds are covered in quilts that celebrate the famous Baltimore Album floral versions crafted in the 1840s.

Virgin Hotels Edinburgh, Scotland

Located in the city’s historic Old Town next to Edinburgh Castle, Virgin’s first hotel in the UK calls the 19th-century India Buildings home. Virgin signatures like central bar the Commons Club appear here, as do more personal touches like the Eve Branson suite, an homage to company founder Richard Branson’s late mother. Vaulted ceilings, antiqued glass, and a showpiece chandelier by Arthur Mamou-Mani juxtapose 222 light-filled guestrooms, while the rooftop sanctuary embraces views of the castle.

Hotel Barrière Fouquet’s New York

The first U.S. outpost from the French family-run Barrière Group, the Tribeca location—the handiwork of Martin Brudnizki Design Studio—is an Art Deco dream, dominated by a striking lavender hue and shades of green that make an impressive splash in the custom wallpaper cloaking the 97 pied-à-terre-style guestrooms. A toile de jouy that nods to the patterned fabrics adorning the brand’s Normandy flagship is updated with decidedly New York vignettes, including the neighborhood’s own Robert De Niro in a scene from Taxi Driver.

andBeyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge, Tanzania

Tasked with reimagining the andBeyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge after it flooded in April 2020, Fox Browne Creative’s modern makeover of the 10-room luxury camp (with one family suite) follows the contours of the Grumeti River while retaining its natural rustic quality. The result is a revitalized safari camp that is sensitive to its surroundings, thanks to vibrant interiors and patterns that nod to its location.

Casa TO, La Punta Zicatela, Oaxaca, Mexico

Drawing from the natural surroundings of surf capital La Punta Zicatela, the nine-room Casa TO stars raw concrete archways and circular openings that give way to climbing plants and vegetation, as well as a central infinity pool and solarium. Sustainability is also top of mind, thanks to a water treatment plant to reuse wastewater, solar panels, a zero plastics policy, and furniture built by expert carpenters from nearby Puebla, Guadalajara, and Oaxaca.

Mutigny Resort Hotel, France

Overlooking the lush hills of France’s Champagne region, the 101-room spa hotel is a lesson in minimalism with natural materials—including sustainable poplar wood that wraps the exterior—cultivating a raw and honest dialogue with the landscape. Warmed by oak panels that line the interior mezzanine, the communal hub of the property is centered around the fireplace, inviting guests to linger and take in views of the verdant hillside from the floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights.

Nobu Hotel Barcelona

Japanese and Spanish details meet at the 259-room Nobu Hotel Barcelona, injecting the tower it occupies with glamour and sophistication. This starts at the façade, where bamboo trees create a serene link between the bustling street and the entry. Inside, a sculptural staircase adds a sense of drama, thanks in part to a hanging art installation comprising floating charred wood pieces.

Holloway House, West Hollywood, California

The 34-room Holloway House is a five-minute drive from Soho House West Hollywood, the first location that the members club heavyweight opened in Los Angeles. But it stands out for its midcentury artworks by the likes of David Hockney, mint terrazzo flooring, tactile golden fabrics, and burgundy leather booths that have vintage Sunset Boulevard vibes. Pieces from primarily local, young artists also make the Soho House outpost feel decidedly of the moment.

The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon

The tallest skyscraper in Thailand, the 78-story mixed-use, Tetris-style King Power Mahanakhon Building, is also home to Standard International’s Asia flagship hotel, the 155-room Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon. Here, Spanish designer Jaime Hayon eschewed Thailand’s typical ultra-minimalist aesthetic for Art Deco-inspired interiors resplendent in fluid shapes, vibrant colors, and lush greenery that nod to Bangkok’s melting-pot status and the Standard’s global roots.

Gleneagles Townhouse, Edinburgh, Scotland

The long-awaited sibling to Gleneagles, the legendary country estate in the Perthshire countryside, arrived this year in St Andrew Square. A restoration of two separate bank buildings from the 1700s and 1800s, the 33-room urban retreat, part of Accor’s Ennismore lifestyle division, features meticulously preserved original elements, including six monumental Corinthian columns and supporting statues, behind which roof terrace restaurant Lamplighters is now set.

The Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad

A reimagining of the brand for the next generation of travelers, the soaring, ground-up Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad flaunts 250 rooms, 16 penthouse residences, and a dynamic roster of F&B offerings from José Andrés—a plant-filled Bazaar by José Andrés is forthcoming—brought to life by an A-list team of designers. Consider Martin Brudnizki Design Studio’s green marble floor and glossy ceilings at rooftop cocktail bar Nubeluz, or Rockwell Group’s distinctly Mediterranean fusion of bronze, white oak, and splashes of blue at Zaytinya.

Rosewood São Paulo

The fusion of old and new is central to the design of the 160-room Rosewood São Paulo, a collaboration between a powerhouse design team of Jean Nouvel and Philippe Starck. Here, the fully restored historic Matarazzo Maternity ward (home to 46 guestrooms and suites and the hotel’s six restaurants) joins the new Mata Atlantic tower, which is covered in wood and wrapped in 10,000 trees. A highlight: Starck’s bold yet restrained interiors draw attention to the permanent collection of 450 site-specific artworks created by 57 Brazilian artists.

Hotel Terrestre, Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico

The solar-powered Hotel Terrestre from Grupo Habita comprises a series of sand-colored white mud brick villas that integrate with the location. Almost completely open, the 14 rooms flaunt wooden doors that reveal private sand and flower gardens with mountain views. The secluded bolthole also includes open-air showers and rooftop plunge pools, which run through the garden to create ponds, cascading showers, and a mystic spa.

Wildflower Farms, Auberge Resorts Collection, Hudson Valley, New York

Nestled on 140 acres in the Catskill Mountains in New York, Auberge’s latest offering is inspired by the Hudson Valley’s wild beauty, with a design deeply rooted in nature. An antidote to urban life, the 65-room property boasts light-filled interiors, a central fireplace wrapped in tapestries, handblown glass fixtures, and the 9,000-square-foot wellness facility, Thistle.

Located at the heart of the Water Street Tampa mixed-use development, the property boasts seven F&B concepts, a vast wellness facility, 172 rooms and 38 residences, and the Rooftop, where guests dine at Azure at EDITION then relax in a cabana or on a sun lounger at the lush DJ-fueled pool club.

Thompson Madrid

For Thompson’s European debut, the lifestyle brand brought its signature sophisticated flair to Madrid. Nodding to the city’s cultural legacy, amber tones, dark woods, elegant marble, and leather pervade the reception area, two central courtyards, three signature dining venues, and the 175 pared-back guestrooms. An escape from the buzzing Calle de la Montera below, the rooftop is an oasis offering panoramic city views.

Conrad Los Angeles

The Downtown Los Angeles revival continues with the Grand LA, the booming Frank Gehry-designed development that unites shopping, dining, and residential experiences. It is here that Conrad Hotels & Resorts makes its California debut with a design that is laidback California chic, with muted linens, polished concrete, and wide-planked soft oak floors. Ceppo di Gre stone sourced from Lombardy’s Lake Iseo adds a sleek Italian flourish to the airy lobby, which is strewn with planters and crowned with an undulating ceiling that mimics Gehry’s kinetic façade.

The Boca Raton, Florida

Set on 200 waterfront acres, the iconic 1926-era Boca Raton’s $200 million makeover was inspired by architect Addison Mizner’s original Mediterranean Revival story. The storied Palm Court has been recentered as the heart of the 1,038-room hotel with Rockwell Group preserving and relocating stained-glass windows to the communal space—another nod to the legacy of the property.

Canoe Place Inn & Cottages, Hampton Bays, New York

The inn, which dates back to the 1600s, sat vacant for nearly two decades before it was revived this year as a quaint getaway with 13 guestrooms, seven suites, and five guest cottages. Lovingly restored by design firm Workstead, the hotel is imbued with vintage elements that pay homage to a bygone era while also channeling the comfort of a classic Hamptons residence.

Sommerro, Oslo, Norway

An arresting example of adaptive reuse, the 231-room Sommerro is found within a neoclassical building designed by Andreas Bjercke and Georg Eliassen between 1917 and 1930. The former headquarters of the city’s energy company, it is laden with Art Deco details that speak to the past. This vintage mood even carries over to Vestkantbadet, an old public bath revitalized as a 15,000-square-foot holistic retreat where the infrared sauna, cold plunge pool, and sleep treatments are buoyed by a mosaic wall depicting joyous swimmers that was restored tile by tile.

The Scarlet Hotel, Lincoln, Nebraska

A love for Nebraska permeates the Scarlet Hotel, part of Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio. Found on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Innovation Campus, the 154-room hotel takes cues from the much-loved Cornhusker football team. Super-sized vintage game programs, for example, cover the walls of the café. Other elements, including reclaimed wood from a local barn and photography that captures the spirit of various Nebraska cities, ground the hotel in a distinctly Midwest setting.

La Zambra, Málaga, Spain

During the 1980s and ’90s, royalty and celebrities flocked to the decadent Byblos Hotel. Now part of Hyatt’s Unbound Collection, the Spanish Mediterranean icon has been reimagined as the 197-room La Zambra, an Andalusian sanctuary with private terraces and warm bursts of terracotta that encourage relaxation more than hedonism. The centerpiece is the nearly 27,000-square-foot dome-crowned Mood Spa, where one of five wellness journeys unfolds against a backdrop of Turkish baths and Jacuzzis.

Mondrian Mexico City Condesa

Set between two of the city’s most alluring neighborhoods—La Roma and La Condesa—in the I421 mixed-use complex, the first-ever Mondrian in Mexico City, opening this quarter, nods to the Art Deco architecture the area is known for. Inside, a maximalist color palette complements vibrant murals by Ara Starck that enliven the 183 guestrooms, cultivating a Surrealist wonderland that captures the city’s avant-garde spirit.

The Julius Prague

House of Julius Meinl has long been synonymous with coffee and gourmet groceries, but the 160-year-old family-run heritage brand has now ventured into lodging with the extended stay 168-room Julius Prague. The Quoin, Wilmington, Delaware

A transformation of a 19th-century bank building, the charming 24-room Quoin from hospitality company Method Co. calls upon its history with eclectic interiors that layer in Shaker-inspired furniture and an earthy color palette reminiscent of the Victorian era. Crowning the hotel is the rooftop bar—the first in the city—which offers sweeping views of Wilmington’s Old Town Hall.

The Wall Street Hotel, New York

Working closely with developer husband Jeffrey Dagowitz of Actium, Liubasha Rose of Rose Ink Workshop transformed a 100-year-old office building into the 180-key property, countering Wall Street’s high-charged masculine energy with a more airy and welcoming approach. Canopies with flowers and greenery wraps the building’s three façades, while the interiors are drenched in natural light and a showstopping handpainted mural depicting impressionistic scenes of Downtown New York.

Hyatt Regency San Francisco Downtown SoMa

The former Park Central Hotel has been reimagined as the 686-room Hyatt Regency, courtesy of BHDM. The art-centric narrative is revealed in pieces like a rope installation inspired by the Golden Gate Bridge that hangs above the reception desk and a variety of digital art show pieces that appear in the game space. Additionally, the design firm partnered with the Academy of Art University to commission artwork from select students and alumni, which is displayed throughout the hotel.

Habitas-on-Hudson, Rhinebeck, New York

Joining a slew of new hotels opening in upstate New York, the sustainability-led Habitas brand opened its first property in North America in the charming village of Rhinebeck this December. A collaboration between Habitas and hotelier André Balazs, the countryside retreat is home to 30 rustic guestrooms across the property’s historic Neo-Baroque Manor House and two adjacent structures. True to Habitas’ experiential quality, guests will also have access to a swimmable pond, hiking trails, and a working farm with an organic farm-to-table dining experience.
