Craft cocktail and natural wine venue Eavesdrop has debuted in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, New York. As the name suggests, music is front and center at the new concept, which was crafted with optimal acoustics by Danny Taylor of audio-visual consultancy House Under Magic. The 1,000-square-foot space boasts intimacy and an immersive aural experience that ensconces guests in sound.
“We wanted the concept to extend beyond just ‘expensive speakers in a bar.’ Listening to an album is a journey and we want guests to enjoy a space that encourages exploration, mystery, and surprise,” Taylor says. “The attention to the experience extends beyond the aesthetic—we incorporated the same design principles as one would in building a recording studio, such as hidden sound absorption and treatment.”
Custom speakers command the front room, which is also anchored by a custom bar topped with poured concrete terrazzo. Curved rafters are outfitted with inset lighting, while acoustic treatments adorn walls and ceilings to further enhance the quality of music and conversation. The soft lines and warm palette of the front room transition into an atmosphere of greater complexity and more intricate textures as guests move toward the Sound Wall, a custom furniture-grade speaker system designed by audio engineer Tom Danley. Slatted plywood wraps the cabinet, which is equipped with integrated lighting to further establish the fixture as the sensory focal point of the space.
